Cover Crop Cost Share Program

In 2024, Posey County Soil & Water Conservation District applied for a Clean Water Indiana grant to educate about soil health and help farmers with the cost of planting cover crops. The counties involved in the grant are Posey, Warrick, Vanderburgh, and Gibson County Soil & Water Conservation Districts.

Cover crops play a vital role when it comes to helping our soil and water quality.

  • They add organic matter to the soil, which improves soil structure and allows for better water infiltration and aeration in the soil.

  • Cover crops help retain moisture, making it more resilient to drought and flooding.

  • The roots and biomass of the cover crop helps protect the soil from wind and water erosion, minimizing sediment and nutrient runoff.

  • They can smother weeds out, reducing the need for herbicide or labor intensive control methods.

  • Certain cover crops will attract beneficial insects that will help reduce pests.

  • Certain cover crops will also give certain nutrients back into the soil that will help the production of the cash crop.

  • Cover crops can break up compacted soils, improving water infiltration and root penetration.

If you're interested in learning more about our cover crop cost share program, please call your local Soil & Water Conservation District.

Applications are open May-July.
